Information

Retained surgical items (RSIs) are a “never event,” and their continued occurrence creates pressure on hospitals to improve their sponge management protocols. We can help reduce adverse events, such as retained surgical sponges, by assessing human factors, creating a safety, quality culture, and applying effective leadership skills. These strategies, along with the use of adjunct technology, will result in positive patient outcomes and will increase patient safety within the perioperative and L&D space. In this session, you will learn how using adjunct technology with manual counts can help contribute to the prevention of RSIs.

By attending this session you'll be able to:

  • Discuss how to reduce adverse events, such as retained surgical sponges, by assessing human factors, creating a safety, quality culture, and applying effective leadership skills.
  • Identify the impact of retained surgical sponges on the patient, OR staff, and hospital.
  • Describe adjunct technologies and their role in helping to prevent retained surgical sponges and manage miscounts.
