Leaning Towards Excellence

Leaning Towards Excellence

Information

The University of Rochester Medical Center launched a LEAN project as a result of the Food and Drug Administration’s ban on powdered gloves to address concerns about case breakdown numbers and staff exposure to latex. After conducting a surgical glove trial and extensive staff education on latex allergy, OR leaders adopted the use of Biogel gloves. Surgical glove SKUs decreased from 13 to 3, room teardowns caused by unrecognized latex allergy patients decreased to zero, and estimated cost savings of more than $43,000 per year were achieved as a result. In addition, 111 cubic feet of storage space was regained in the center core.

By attending this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the potential cost savings of a "LEAN" OR.
  • Identify tools to find champions and signage to overcome the hurdles of change.
  • Discuss how to transition to a latex-free/latex-reduced surgical environment.
